I'm just beginning to learn about GPS. My question: can a unit, such as the Garmin Nuvi 350, be used handheld when I'm visiting New York City, or walking in a city I'm not familiar with? Would the tall buildings block out the signal? Or would it not work for some other reason? I'd like to have a unit that works for car and for pedestrian use. Thanks.

main problem is that when walking slowly your track up might not work. usually you need 3-4mph to see the map oriented correctly.
a unit like the 60csx/76csx has a built in compass which orients the map correctly when walking...nuvis dont have that.
a 60csx/76csx with cn2008 nt and a 2gb microsd will navigate nicely for both auto / hiking use.
thats primarily what i use it for.

Thank you for the info. I want "text to speech", so I guess I'll have to go with one for an auto, and forget the pedestrian.

The nuvi 350 has a high-sensitivity receiver so it should be fine for the most part in the City. You may get some blockage but that's going to happen no matter the receiver.

The 350 has track up and 3-d navigation on the map view so using it while walking should be okay, too. It also has an off-road mode so again you should be fine if you get away from the streets.

I definitely agree, as I have had this problem many times myself (about the walking slow thing, that is).

This is obviously a pretty big problem, but one other problem, as suspected, would certainly be blockage issues.

When using a GPS in big cities, the tall buildings will definitely effect your GPS from time to time, so yes, "blockage" will most likely be a factor.

No GPS will work perfect in these conditions, but my garmin streetpilot c340 always seems to do pretty well in big cities!

- Matt

I don't think many gps systems will work that great in this situation.

Yes, there is such GPS in the world. I am using ZorrroGPS, it has six vehicle options for me to choose: car, pedestrian, moto, bicycle, train and plane. I can use it both driving and walking. No problem with GPS signal reception.

Gee you talk some rubbish fella. There is no real way around bad reception areas and if you think changing some setting is going to fix it then you are a lot more stupid than I have thought!
