I just bought a Magellan Triton 400, and I have a specific task I need to accomplish with it.

I need to map a trail system, then transfer the map to my PC. I would like the map to be overlaid on a satellite photo of the area to provide the trail map with actual terrain features to assist the viewer in orienting themselves with the trail.

Is this possible? If so, where would the overlay take place, in the 400 or in the PC? Where and how would I go about it? Will it integrate with Google Earth or some other online mapping site? Do I need to purchase other software to make this happen?

Thanks in advance!

I have no experience with the Magellan Triton 400 but generally speaking you should be able to download a tracklog from your GPS and bring it into desktop software.

What is the source of your satellite photo? You can use a program like OxiExplorer to georeference the photo and overlay your downloaded tracklog on it.

There are also programs like GPSTrackMaker (freeware) which will export the track directly to GoogleEarth for viewing.

I appreciate the info! I have been lurking around Google Earth and found that capability, gonna experiment tonight by logging a track of my daughter's Halloween rounds and try to overlay in on a GE sat photo.

What do you think of the Super Quads from Nat Geo Topo? Would it have better resolution than the GE sat photo?

I've never used it so can't comment. Hopefully someone who has will reply.
